reinactment in Leeds UK
Titanic re-enactment for Millennium Square
BY KATIE BALDWIN
THE world's most famous watery disaster is to be recreated in landlocked Leeds as the Titanic sails into the city.
Forget Kate and Leonardo, this version of the legendary story will feature spectacular pyrotechnics, 40,000 litres of water and a live band in Millennium Square.
Drama
The show by German theatre company Theater Titanik is being staged in a specially-built outdoor amphitheatre from today until Sunday as part of the Rhythms of the City festival which sees more than 100 street performances in the city centre over three weeks.
This is the first time that the dramatic re-telling of the Titanic story has been performed in Yorkshire after visiting festivals throughout the world.
Councillor John Procter, executive board member with responsibility for leisure services, said: "Theater Titanik will astound audiences with an unforgettable piece of outdoor theatre, in which we will see the Titanic built, launched and sunk right here on Millennium Square.
"Rhythms of the City is building a reputation for bringing large-scale open-air shows to Millennium Square. For those people who enjoyed previous year's shows such as Bushfire and Circus Baobab then Titanic is definitely a must see."
The show begins with Titanic's creation in steamy shipyard furnaces and her glitzy Champagne launch, to the final encounter with the iceberg, using no words but a live score.
Theater Titanik has received funding from NRW@uk, a cultural exchange programme which helps bring events from Germany to Britain.
Iceberg
Titanic set out from Southampton on its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, bound for New York.
Two days later the mammoth ship struck an iceberg at 11.40pm and had sunk within two and a half hours. More than 1,500 people were killed.
The story of the so-called unsinkable ship has been immortalised in books and films, most famously in the 1997 film Titanic starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, which became the highest-grossing movie of all time.
l Tickets cost £10, concessions with identification are £9 or £8 and family tickets for two adults and up to three children are £29 or £27 with Breeze cards.
Tickets are available from West Yorkshire Playhouse and their ticket agents, Gateway Yorkshire Tourist Information Centre, Leeds Central Library and online at www.leeds.gov.uk/rhythms.
Limited tickets, if available, can be bought from Millennium Square box office on show days from noon until 8.45pm.
Gates open at 7.30pm and the show starts at 8.50pm.

Re: reinactment in Leeds UK
Wow, that sounds like something I'd like to see. Even if only to see how they produce a sinking in an outdoor theater. No words, just music hunh? Interesting.

Re: reinactment in Leeds UK
Hi MB, small world.
Anyway, is anyone going to see this thing? Because if someone would tape it, I'll pay for it.
