Why it stands out for me

Hi All

The following is out of todays paper and it stood out for me not for the fact it was a titanic piece but the word Myrtle. This was the pet name of my Ex Father law for my EX wife.

Titanic exhibit good family fun

By Jan A. Igoe

The Sun News

At first, it seems odd that the Titanic exhibit at Ripley's Aquarium is subtitled "Island of life," considering that the ship's demise cost 1,500 lives.

The most technologically advanced ship of her day - touted as unsinkable by "God himself," according to a deck hand - went down on her maiden voyage in 1912 after nine warnings about the 300,000-ton iceberg in her path were ignored.

The wreckage was unreachable for decades until 1985, when new technology made it possible for oceanographer Robert Ballard to reach uncharted ocean depths and reveal Titanic's evolving wonders to the world above.

Today her massive hull hosts a massive and intricate 65-ton life form known as "rusticles," which scientists say may be a precursor to complex multicell life. The exhibit introduces opportunistic undersea creatures that now colonize Titanic's remains. Where death once staked the only claim, life has triumphed.

For Ripley's visitors, 28 fascinating exhibits are sure to please trivia buffs and fish fanciers alike. You'll experience what passengers might have seen as they passed within inches of the monstrous iceberg, minutes before tons of icy water flooded Titanic's bow.

Learn how the ship's demise changed winter trade routes, revolutionized reliance on ships' radios, and how simple changes could have spared all on board if arrogance and ignorance had not conspired so successfully.

"With a deadly mix of rank over reason and submission over substance, quiet followers empower flawed leaders," says one exhibit sign.

Graham, this reads like it's from the Myrtle Beach paper, the Sun. Myrtle Beach is in my state, SC, and we frequently go there.

The Ripley's exhibit is a quality work, though I did not attend the opening of the Titanic exhibit in March of this year. I did have a friend who attended it.

Myrtle Beach received its name from all the crepe myrtle trees growing in the area.

I only just now read this thread. I get to Myrtle Beach once or twice a year or so (we sometimes dive out of Little River) and have seen the Ripley museum. Didn't know they had a Titanic exhibit--have to check it out next time I'm there. Hell, I'll see/watch/read anything about Titanic. I'm a Titanic slut. emoticon

7th, if you're a diver, go to www.offthewalldiving.com

A friend runs a charter service on the Cooper River and off the coast of Wilmington. He always comes back with lots of megladon teeth from Wilmington, and lots of relic as well as teeth from the Cooper. If you see a young man on a motorcycle, it's my son. We live about 20 miles from "the wall" as seen in Deliverance.

I'll bet lots of things will be uncovered after the storms go through.

Your fellow diver... Unsinkable
