Re: I wonder ???????
Hi Wills
I think there is a lot of complications to it, but I wounder if this is one of the reasons he wanted to go back. I may be totaly off track but in a way it does seem logical.

Re: I wonder ???????
Hi All
I have just been reading thr reports on the web site about the trip back. In what I said earlier about the other reason here is a piece of the report from June 7th.
Now that Dr. Ballard has achieved his dream of connecting students and the public to real-time science, what’s next? He sees a future where this kind of experience is not limited to just a few weeks of expedition activity. He’s promoting permanent installations of remotely-operated vehicles and telepresence technology that can be used by both the scientific community and the general public to research and visit locations worthy of being considered underwater museums and national parks. (This effort is already well underway with installations in several National Marine Sanctuaries around the United States.)
He also is looking forward to the day when shore-based scientists can participate in expeditions as remote members of the science party, allowing expeditions to tap into the knowledge and experience of many more minds than they’re able to fit on a ship. This notion, too, took a large leap forward during Return to Titanic when a group of archaeologists in Rhode Island connected with the expedition to help evaluate the condition of the wreckage. Eventually, Dr. Ballard hopes to be able to lead explorations like this without leaving home – the ultimate test of telepresence. Given the success of this expedition, it’s clear that the realization of these dreams is not far over the horizon.
The entirety can be read at the following:
http://returntotitanic.jason.org/shipsLog/index.asp?page=ship&month=June&day=7
When you read the ships log it dont give a lot away but a few interesting things can be read between the lines.
And from the ships log June 8th
Do you think you'll be back to the Titanic any time soon?
A: The documentation that we've collected here on this trip with these special tools leave me quite content that we have very thoroughly covered and documented the Titanic to the extent that we know the site better than we have before, better than I think anyone has before. I don't think we'll be coming back very soon to Titanic because we've answered a good number of the science questions, which was our reason to be here in the first place.
We won't avoid coming back. We'll continue to work on Titanic, but we've really brought her back virtually. We have the images. We can bring anyone to the Titanic by showing them the tapes. And maybe one day soon we'll be able to install permanent cameras on the bottom. We're not quite there yet, but I think very soon if you look at how fast technology is moving.

Re: I wonder ???????
yes something does smell a bit funny there. however it does take a couple of years of planning to get the ball rolling so tospeak so it could be that cameron was actually working on titanic before ballard actually decided to go back for a visit.

Re: I wonder ???????
You know, ttf and wills, I wouldn't be surprised if Cameron was the catalyst for Ballard's return to Titanic after all. Plus, if he is trying to raise interest for underwater exploration and the telepresence concept, what better way to do it than to return to his most famous discovery, Titanic?

Re: I wonder ???????
Hi
I tend to agree more with TTF now on the subject as the timing does seem right in the end.
But for those who actually have seen the docu on the dive, was it just me or did it appear he was indeed making strong hints towords living pictures been broadcast for a long time, Also the fact his plaque had been removed from the wreck sort of says a lot in its own right.
There again on the other hand he also gave the impresion that it was a farewell to the Titanic from him as well.
It has to be said that personally I have a lot of Respect for Dr Ballard. He has done more for marine exploration than most people have in there lifetime, and his respect for the wrecks he dives is fantastic.
