Titanic protection saught

Hi All

On the 7th Nov 2003 it was reported in the S.Africa new, that Briton had finally decided to see sense and try to designate the Titanic grater protection from salvers.

The link for the whole article is as follows:
http://iafrica.com/news/worldnews/283739.htm

In it it states:
"This government has been a driving force behind the agreement and I welcome the fact that the Titanic will be afforded greater protection because of it," Shipping Minister David Jamieson said in a statement. "

The agreement would recognise the remains of the British-flagged ship and surrounding area as a memorial to those who died, and as "a historical wreck of exceptional international importance".

Now this is good news albeit a bit late but what do we all think. Will it preserve the wreck and give her the protection she should of had from the start. It is a shame though it was not to be designated a grave site, at least then no material could of been brought up legally.

Regards
Graham

Hi Wills

I fully agree, shame they are not pushing for a grave site though.

give them time i bet they will.
however i believe it will take them finding someremains to make it declared a grave site.
if they did that then they would have to declare any wreck site a grave site. even those from a hundred years ago.

i somehow do not see that happening. no exceptions.

hi Wills

I hear what you are saying here my friend but certain wrecks have the mark of grave site now, One very close to me in the North sea has been given the tag Grave site and is held in high esteem.

I think considering the number of lives lost it would be a good move. The bismark for instance is renowned for this status, and many others.

yes i hear you as well.

sometimes people tend to go overboard ...
you are right the bismark is a good place to start . however as far as titanic is concerned it is going to take a while.

Hi Wills

Unfortunately as far as I can see it will never happen till she is no more, Lets say even she was granted this now what would be the point, Personal belongings have already been brought up ok it will stop any more but a court would say it has already happened.

that graham ,
is the main reason i have been skeptical about the whole ordeal.
it would be nice but it would also be rather pointless unless they make them return the other items to the bottom and i doubt very seriously they would ever do that.

It's nice that people are willing to give the site protected status - unfortunately, said status needs to be respected - and it ain't.
