J Bruce Ismay (opinions)

What are you opinions on the actions of J Bruce Ismay, during the sinking?

If you were him, would you get into the empty seat on the boat or stand back and die?

Re: J Bruce Ismay (opinions)

this is a very hard question to answer.

i can not say fro sure what i would do if i was in his shoes. i will say this i would do my best to assist the officers.
i really think that if i was in the same situtation and i did what ismay did i would not have been able to live with myself....

on the other side of things.... i know that he was just a passenger . even if he was the owner. this is just a difficult assumption .

Hi Tom

Would I have done the same as Bruce? well in the truth, I don't honestly know. You have to take into account the situation as it occurs. It is so simple to say no I would not of done it but when the situation is there most of us would of. Self preservation is instinct not man made. Just as a animal will fight for food in order to survive so do we. Most of us eat to survive not survive to eat. if that makes sense. So when a situation of life endanger comes up instinct takes over.

As for Bruce, well he did help as this is proved in testimonies from others on board. And according to him when he and not forgetting Mr Carter got in the same boat there was supposed to be no one around.

Wills is correct in her statement that Bruce was a passenger, as such had the same right as all passengers on the ship, the right to a lifeboat. This was not available to all we know. Not just the fact the ship did not carry sufficient boats but it was kind of regarded that you paid for a seat in a lifeboat by travelling first class.

Regards
Graham

Re: J Bruce Ismay (opinions)

Well, now, after having a smoke and a pink gin and thinking a bit, I have come to the conclusion that Ismay was a case of "Danged if you do...danged if you don't." Had he stayed aboard, in effect committing suicide, people would have said he did so in order to avoid having to answer the rather uncomfort-able questions brought up at the Inquiries.

I believe that Ismay was pretty much what he said: merely a passenger. Elsewhere I have set down the testimony of the amount of control a captain has over his ship, but I shall put it here as well. When asked the following, Rostron testified:

Senator SMITH. In your company, who is the master of a ship at sea?

Mr. ROSTRON. The captain.

Senator SMITH. In absolute control?

Mr. ROSTRON. In absolute control, legal and otherwise. No one can interfere.

I do believe that says all.

Also as Graham has pointed out, Ismay did help at the boats and was seen doing so. He was visibly devastated by the disaster and indeed it was a long time before he recovered fully...if he ever really did.

Hi Lights

I don't go against what you say at all as you know I have defended Ismay for a long time. Not just for the sake of it but that I believe he was the one with the raw deal all down the line.

But Ismay as a person did learn to get over it, In fact he unlike well told all over the place, did not become a recluse. He carried on working he was also asked to return to the line to try to get it out of trouble. He was well known and an involved person in many communities.

In reality Ismay had nothing to worry about regarding the sinking or aftermath.

I don't think I am making this sound right but will probably end up making a long post as usual.

Regards
Graham

I don't debate that he got over it externally, as most survivors did--as they HAD to do in order to go on. However, I suspect that inside it might have been a different story....again as was probably the case with many survivors. This is what I meant in the forgoing post.

Hi Wills and all

I could do a long post on post dramatic stress etc. but wont. :-)

Unfortunately like I said it was not a thing offered then, today they would of been offered it strait away including those aboard the Carpathia for the same thing.

It was a thing for the rich though and they had to pay for it at that.

i wander how she took it when she found out.
