posticon Giant Life Boats!! Just a thought!

Why aren't ships supplied with huge air mattreses (say 100 feet by 100 feet) and they inflate as soon as they touch the water? Wouldn't that be very useful as a platform to resque passengers?? Like the one in my amature drawing! emoticon I guess the Titanic size ships would need just 4 or 5 of these for all passengers. They could be rolled like huge carpets on the sides of the ship (2 from each side). What do you think? Is that a very silly idea?

I am glad u liked it Tom. I can assure you that people would feel safe in ships fitted with such a thing....I know I would....just like a car's air bags emoticon

Hi Titanica

Now that is a real god picture,

You defiantly have my mind working on this now, I can foresee some problems but in all it seems a great idea.

I am not sure logistically it would work, It would need a lot of air to blow one up. And not sure how you could get something like that to work. But a floating pontoon is a great idea. Of course it does hold some problems.

Most ship wrecks happen in stormy conditions. People would not be able to hold on to a raft, Plus they are not grouped together under cover. open to the elements. I know the argument is that it is better to be given half a chance than none and the theory seems sound to me.

Regards
Graham

Thanks Graham 4 giving it a thought. I know that there are "resque rafts" already available, but I dont know why not make larger ones.
You mentioned
quote:

... It would need a lot of air to blow one up...

but with the nowadays technology, there must be some solutions...e.g. several blowing mini-motors attached should be able to inflate it in half an hour or so.

I think, if there is a handle or a rope attached to the floor of the raft (with their "All-weather-jacket" on, passengers may be able to survive for a few hours waiting for a resque!!

I agree with you, it is not a very easy task to use it (especially for kids and elderly people), but as you said "half a chance is better than no chance at all".

It is just a thought! emoticon

Hi Titanica

Again I am not knocking it in the least, but another problem I have just thought of is this.

I am sure you have seen bouncy castles, Now imagine this been beside the ship. People would jump into it from the decks of the ship. While this seems a great and quick way of getting off the ship the consequences could be as fatal as staying on board.

Watch a group of children playing on a bouncy castle, as they jump so do the rest as air is displaced through the structure of the air bag. I am sure a different way of getting on could be made like a chute, as a aircraft uses to get out of a stricken plane.

And in answer, yes a way could be found to blow up and keep the bag inflated. There is many ways this could be done.

On a side note and I will have to search other boards for the answer to this, but recently someone worked out how many of the life jackets it would take sown together to accommodate the survivors from the titanic as a raft. This idea is similar to yours but you are been logical in a way that you are preparing a inflatable float. the other I mention is a hypothetical idea I think.

As for ropes etc. ye no doubt again it could work.

I still think it is a great idea and there seems to be no reason it could not work for the short term rescue.

Regards
Graham

Another (giant raft) suggestion....

What if there were several smaller rafts or "rescue platforms" that could be linked together as soon as they are thrown overboard. Just like in my second (again amaturrish) scetch!! I know they can be useful as a safer place, especially if there were many preditors lurking down there....emoticon

Wills, the sharks look scary, don't they? What about the idea? I just love ships and cruises, but I must admit...I sort of suffer from "sinking-phobia"!! emoticon Since I read about the Titanic and seen one of the earlier movies when I was little (I don't really remember which one was it!) I can't bring my self to tavel by sea (although I adore it). I want a safer (much much safer) vessels than they are now! I live on the Mediterenian; and it is not hitting an ice-berg (or being left in freezing water for long) the main cause of fatality....SHARKS ARE!
