Re: dum crew men
Hi 86chvs10
No problems, we all make mistakes, It takes more to say sorry than it does to make the mistake.
I hope you will post more messages in the forum and that this little episode does not put you off in any way.
Try to put your question in a better way, or like I said before follow up your point with a explanation of what you mean.
You have to remember this is a forum so ways in which you post are only seen in print. Therefore the words are taken literally, so they are answered the same way.
I hope to see you post some more and welcome to the group.
By the way where did you get the name from, And is it possible to find a easier one to call you? :-)
Regards
Graham

Re: dum crew men
I think the appellation "dumb" is unfair in regards to the crew, but it is understandable that one might feel that way in light of the huge loss of life and the insights which hindsight (and I do stress the word "hindsight" here)have given us.
Unfortunately, the shipping industry was at the time on a sort of "lucky streak" as regards disasters at sea and I think this good luck was mistaken for the decision that ships had finally got to be unsinkable...silly I know, in light of TITANIC, but I suppose they might be forgiven in light of a lack of any evidence to the contrary.
It would have been only too natural for crew as well as the general public to buy into the "unsinkability myth", and this may have blinded them somewhat to the danger...
Plus, at least in the case of Officers and Captain, they had had close calls before and always gotten out fine...no reason not to assume that they could avoid disaster this time as well. Even at the worst, a berg should be able to be sighted in time to avoid hitting it....

Re: dum crew men
I know, Lights, it's almost the same as so many people moving to L.A. in the fifties and sixties because there were no earthquakes...they were pushing the odds and didn't realize it.
Even so, the Great Eastern had been built with a lot of redundancy in it - and all those safety measures being chipped away - there are reasons for those designs. Most engineers are cautious people, and for good reason - they know a lot of the possibilities. Icebergs were on that list.

Re: dum crew men
Hi TTf
I do agree with both of you, Ships have always encountered obstacles in there way and in most cases got away with it,
Icebergs are still a threat today as a quick look at a database viewable on the net who I cannot remember now shows ships still hit them.
Engineers try to find ways round it, they fight with designers who fight with scientists who fight with architects, But at the end of the day the main fight goes with builders and owners. Cash is the big answer, it all works on the wallet and as we know corners are often cut for the sake of a few pounds.
It was once stated by a scientific development company they could get rid of most of the burgs in the shipping lanes making safe travel, Great idea but the cost of this was not so much in pound notes but in land, It would reclaim half the land already saved from the sea and put city after city under water. Plus it was a daft idea anyway.
regards
Graham
