Re: Rose and Jack
Hi All
I seem to recollect on another board a long time ago this same question been put forward. If my memory serves me right someone in the know asked Cameron and he said they where pure fiction. To add storyline to the film, Now I admit I do not really like the film, purely because of the story line. But also do have to point out that a lot of it is in fact true.
I do honestly believe Cameron let pass the best chance of anyone to make a true and factual film.
Regards
Graham

Re: Rose and Jack
I almost want to say Cameron got Rose due to it being his grandmother's name but I don't know that for a fact... I read somewhere that Rose was based on SOMEONE but I Can't remember WHERE I saw that..
However I know where Cal's name originated from:
The name of the character Caledon Hockley derives from two small towns (Caledon and Hockley) near Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, where Cameron's aunt and uncle live.
When James Cameron was writing the movie, he intended for the main characters Rose DeWitt Bukater and Jack Dawson to be entirely fictitious. It was only after the script was finished that he discovered that there had been a real "J. Dawson" who died aboard the Titanic. This "J. Dawson" was trimmer Joseph Dawson, who had been born September 1888 in Dublin, Ireland. His body was salvaged and buried at Fairview Lawn cemetery in Nova Scotia with many other Titanic victims. Today, his grave stone (#227) is the most widely visited in the cemetery.

I too, saw that documentary about the trimmer, Joseph Dawson, for which we were introduced to his survivng next-of-kin.
Yet still, I'm completely mystified as to how the name, Rose/Ruth Dewitt Bukater come to be chosen as a ficticious name to be played by Kate Winslet & Frances Fisher.
