Hi All

Well on family history, All my family have been in the forces somewhere along the line, apart from my real roots. We where a familiy of land owners in Yorkshire and all my side of the family still are aparently. Most of the side are from Navy background apart from my Grandad on my fathers side who was Arm.

we where raised at Scarborough or near Scarborough on the east coast. It is also interesting as I look at the fam tree to notice the femail side all seemd to go into the theatre in one way or other and the male side are all there own boss after the service.

Maybe I was switched at birth as I seem to be the only one who had such a strong desire to go to sea and was not allowed. Well not with the RN.

Family connections living now include a high court judge, MP and a host of theatre and film relatives. and a lot of other things as well.

LOL

Yes but the familiy is now sort of split in a way, Most of the familiy now live away and lead there own life and dont realy get together. The closest side of the fam is my mothers side when we always like so many familiys meet for hatch match and dispatch, so no formal meetings now take place.

The imideate familiy of course get together as often as possable, My brother and I who are real close as well meet up a lot and my mother lives just across the road so I see her every day when she is here. She llikes to travel to Leeds a lot and be with the grand kids.

As for a soap opera you bet TTF some of the things my familiy have done would not be believed.

HI Wills

Like a lot of familiys we tend to stick by one and other when needed, But like I also say our familiy has sort of outgrown the area it started from and now lives away from the home roots. I still have my mothers side who have not wandered from Scarborough but as for the rest they are dotted about all over now.

I am a firm believer in family helping one and other in times of need and this is important to me and well imidiate familiy. But it is not always possable now with the miles apart and work commitments, but me and my brother are close as I am with my mother.

On my presnt life, I need help with my Armenian-Russian ancestry side of my Family Tree. Even learning the port(s) where they sailed out of, the name(s) of the ship(s) they sailed on for Ellis Island in New York harbor, how I can get hold of a ship's manifest for which their names are listed on, etc. Here's their story...

quote:

For one thing, my grandfather, Arthur Ivan SAPHILOFF b. 16 Mar. 1885 in Tifles, Russia, and grandmother, Elsa WALTERS b. 20 Apr. 1876 (3-yrs. younger than Will Murdoch) in So. Germany; came together in the "Big Apple".

Now, about my granddad's branch of our FT. They, you see--are Armenians. The Turks invaded Armenia, and killed many people. The Russians came to the defense of the Armenians, and as a result many of them migrated to Russia, and some of them changed their names. SAPHILIAN, which was my gt. grandparents' real name was changed to SAPHILOFF, to give it a Russian sound, and even more important, it was changed for protection purposes. The Saphilians were living in Italy when the Turks struck Armenia. They had left Armenia, b/c of the threat of the Turksput, after Russia's intervention on behalf of Armenia they decided to move from Italy to Tifles, Russia, a very modern resort city in southern Russia, located on the shores of the Black Sea.

There they became very successful merchants, owned an amusement park, and were well off financially. They were so successful that they became wealthy land owners on whom were betstowed titles: Grand Duke, Duchess, and Dukes, etc. All this success proved to be their undoing, b/c the Bolshevik Revolution under Lenin overthrowed the Czarist Government, and did away with the wealthy and titled landowners.

Before the overthrow of the government of Czarist Russia, my granddad, who was tutored by private teachers and could speak seven languages fluently, including the English language. Decerning what would come to pass in Russia; and not being in sympathy with the ruling class in the treatment of the poor, and in complete disagreement with the Russian Orthodox Church which he thought and rightly so that much of the blame was the church's, decided to flee Russia while he still could. He asked his father, John Michael Saphiloff, to be relieved of his partnership in the business so he could go to America. For a while, and even after my biological father, A.W. Saphiloff was born 25 Feb. 1910 in NYC, he received a regular allowance from home, but shortly after trouble broke out in Russia. From that day on, my granddad, had not another word from his family. Inquiries from the consul and the ambassador from Russia in NYC could obtain no information regarding their whereabouts, or whether they were alive or not. My gt. grandparents, aunts & uncles just disappeared from off the face of the earth.

It is believed they were either slain or shipped to Siberia, Russia, where millions of politcal prisoners eventually died.

Now about my grandmother, Elsa Saphiloff (nee' Walters...

quote:

She was born on a farm in southern Germany. She came to America the same year my granddad did, during the first decade of the 1900s. She hoped to become a principal woman singer in an opera or concert organization. She had a great soprano voice, she used to sing the scale to my father as a baby, and she could lift the rafters with the sound of her voice when she had a good day.

My granddad came to America to study medicine, but when he met grandma, that put a severe crimp in both of their plans, esecially when funds would soon run out from Russia.

Instead, he became a beauty culturist, the forerunner of what are now known as beauty parlors, while grandma assisted him as manicurist. They took their courses at Professor Royer's School which included the manufacturing of face creams and facial soaps, and other s-called beauty aids, perfumes, etc. In the early 1900s these were not on the market like they are today. Mr. Woodbury, who was a friend of my granddad's, became famous for his manufactured soaps which were on the market for many years.

In the front of my grandparents' establishment, located on the then very fashionable Fifth Avenue, there was the large glass black 'n' white sign read--Professor Arthem I Saphiloff, Famous Russian Beauty Specialist. He was so early in this new field that he had most of the carriage trade of New York City.

BTW, Andranik means Andrew in Armenia. He was named after an Armenian General who was credited with having killed more Turks than he had hairs on his head.
~~~~~~~~~
As you can tell, my father was born one year before Olympic made her maiden voyage crossing from Southampton to New York.
At any rate, any help at all, certainly will be appreciated.
Thank you.
HI Tammy
In answer to your questions regarding how to get information. First in order to get a ships manifest, this wont give you much on the passengers, You want to the passenger and crew list for a given ship. In order to do this you will need the name of the ship and sailing point.
For a quick search have you tried "The ship list" or "cindys list" These are both good on line sites with pasenger lists from all over the world, going back many years.
To find ports the easiest way to do this is the local library, First find the year you are interested in and get a good atlas. Most of these have shiping lanes printed in them, Not for navigation but for research and information. Or a liost of ports is available from most library and good book stores. Again on line the ship list is the best place for such information.
On a personal note it seems a good job you have done so far, Well done and if I can help in any way let me know.
