It also has to be said what a gallant chap he was, at the inquiry well court martial he stuck up for the gunner who's fault it was in reality. He should of had a friend as they say in the Navy, but did it himself as his friend was busy. Lights cross examined the gunner and made sure the answers he wanted where said. the head of the court knew what he was doing but apparently let it go. No one came out bad. Hope this is useful Grahamnondisclosed_email@example.com (graham 01)Mon, 05 Apr 2004 16:38:12 +0000 Re: It may of been Light's birthday but it is April again now and !!!!!!https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p10278,from=rss#post10278https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p10278,from=rss#post10278Yes, that was something old Lights must have wanted to forget...April just wasn't his month, was it? Ah, yes, the GARRY, now THAT must have been a WWI Royal Navy version of "McHale's Navy"! (lol) Thanks so much for the post, Graham. He was off duty in 1918 aboard the Falcon, He was once again in his bunk. When a crash took him to the deck, The Falcon had been hit by a fishing boat, john Fitzgerald. The Falcon was a Three funnel C-class destroyer, it weighed in at 375 tons. An old ship launched in 1899 with a length of 220ft and a slim beam of 21ft. She was one of the 30 knot ships. Her former captain had been killed on the bridge of the Falcon the previous year and she had been re fitted out. her overall crew was a total of 80 men. The Falcon was not the easiest ship to control, especially in high sea, her manageability was even worse and at night next to naught. Lightoller was asleep in his bunk on the night of April 1st 1918, when once again a large lurch threw him from his bunk. How his mind must of gone back to titanic after hearing the grating sounds coming from above. When he rushed on the deck he saw a crumpled bow of the fishing boat. The fishing boat was acting as a convoy escort at the time. but had hit the Falcon in one of the worst places possible. almost amidships. The Falcon was badly damaged and water was entering pretty fast. Lights ordered the boilers be put out and steam blown off. he then transferred all the engineers and stokers to the Fitzgerald. He knew it was not long to go before the Falcon would split in two and founder so he ordered the others abandoned ship into the 2 lifeboats aboard. They where later picked up by the Peterel. Not long after the boats departed the bow broke away and sunk, Lightoller and his first lieutenant stayed aboard the now apparent floating stern with a gunner. With the apparent stern staying afloat the Peterel was ordered to re join the convoy. The three men sat in Lightollers cabin listening to sea chantey's waiting for a tug to tow her to the Humber. Suddenly there was a loud rumbling sound from within the ship, Lightoller knew the bulkheads had given way and in true titanic style the ship filled with cold sea water, the remaining part of the ship reared up and started her plunge to the deep. Aboard the ship was still her armed depth charges, so the three men quickly swam away from the ship in case they exploded. The three men now clung to wreckage till a trawler picked them up half a hour later. At a later court martial all three where cleared of blame, Lightoller got promoted to Lieutenant Commander and given HMS Garry, A Bigger and slightly newer destroyer. The date the Falcon sunk was within days of the anniversary of the Titanic around the same time of day. Regards Grahamnondisclosed_email@example.com (graham 01)Thu, 01 Apr 2004 15:29:47 +0000
