Lusitania carried mail for British claimants
I didn't know this, but at the time of the Lusitania's sinking she was carrying letters to British claimants against the WSL summoning them to appear at NY on 17 May. Where their claims for losses suffered in the Titanic disaster would be heard.
Judge Julius M. Mayer postponed the proceedings for limitation and liability until the British claimants might properly respond.

Re: Lusitania carried mail for British claimants
I found that information in "Titanic:Triumph and Tragedy", when I was looking through it yesterday (Oz Time).
I thought it was interesting because I have never heard anyone mention it before.

Re: Lusitania carried mail for British claimants
Hi Thomas
Been well behind time on this thread it is possible that any contribution may be out dated, But in answer to your question on any ideas. Would it be possible to transcribe the whole of the inquiries?. I realise a lot of the inquiry was don in camera but believe that it is also getting it's way into the public domain. A book relating said transcribes was in the making but I am not sure if it has happened yet.
I am at present doing some in depth research and need to get my hands on the inquiry's but am not able to do so as yet. guess it will have to wait till next in Liverpool.
If you or anyone has any could they please let me know and if possible let me borrow or buy a copy from them.
Regards
Graham

Re: Lusitania carried mail for British claimants
go figure,
of all the titanic books on my shelf i do not have that one....
any ideas where i could find it?
it is kind of hard for me to find titanic books where i live unless i shop like ebay or something.
that story is rather interesting though.
i never knew that.i always thought that the lusitania was hit to get the wmericans into the war or something. i remember hearing that but can not for hte life of me think of where i heard it before.

Re: Lusitania carried mail for British claimants
Hi Wills
There is much on this subject, especially the part of it been hit to bring the Americans into war. The following link may be of interest to you.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig/raico-churchill2.html
I have a lot of other links that I can share with you if you want. Plus a book or two:-)
One good book is "the Lusitanias final voyage" hard to get hold of but is possible on book sites.
Don't just go by this link though there is a lot of other information and research done. This link is just a taster of what you where asking.
The official Lusitania site also has good ground information .
http://www.lusitania.net/
Hope these are helpful, but just as a afterthought try this site.
