well I will take the most charitable explanation: Mr. Joughin likely had a severe misjeidgement of the time he was in the water.
Now as for how the ship went down...well, if he hadn't been suffering an hallucination of some sort...could he have been confabulating?

Dunno, but I have a bit of a problem with his checking his watch - a) because all Titanic's lights were out and there was no moon to provide the light he needed to do so, and b) who looks at a watch when you are in terror and about to die?

I, too, find different people's reactions to situations to be quite interesting. It does prove that generally no two people experience a given situation in quite the same way.
