Re: IS IT RIGHT
Hi TTF
I am not disagreeing with you on this and can see your point. What I am doing is wanting to make sure the reply I give is a good one and not a rushed one, There are many theory why touching the big piece opens people up and also why when they tell children it has been braught up especially for you, Though that statment is of course totaly inacurate as it was braught up for profit. Again I am not against your ideas and certainly would not hold it against you in any way. But please dont slam me down just yet till I have the time to answer correctly. :-)
Although bet your real cute when mad :-)

Re: IS IT RIGHT
Hi Wills and TTf
I do agree money always raises its ugly head in most things, But also I have to agree with wills on the point of whats in it for me, Most titanic researchers seem to think this way and full of there own importance. I have met a lot of them who are the gods of the world aparently and we shuould do as they say. I have to admit it is a honer to be able to say I dont think anyone on this board is like that.

Re: IS IT RIGHT
Whew. This is a tough one. Remember I am a museum professional so I might see things in a little different light. I deal with recovered, restored, and rare artifacts all the time on a daily basis.
Is it done mostly for profit? Well, I don't know. Us museum folks sure aren't getting rich.
Virtually all museums, privately funded or state, have severe and constant budget constraints. We put on 'shows' just like someone producing a movie, play, concert, or any other kind of 'entertainment'. They cost money to produce...and they are done to MAKE money.
Most money raised is cycled back into the museum itself. Exhibits and artifact care is very expensive. Many people think that once you bring something up it can just lay around in some box somewhere between exhibits--not so--not so at all. There is a tremendous amount of care and work that has to be done to most of these things constantly to insure their longevity and appearance.
Sure, some might be in it for the bucks--but nobody ever got rich running a museum. And some might be in it for the ego BS that was just mentioned...that I can believe--I've met some of them.
But by far the majority of museum people at all levels (and remember I know a lot of them) are in it for the love of the past and the material culture that reflects the people and the times gone by. It's something that draws us. Why do people GO to museums? The same thing. That why the Smithsonian is called "The Nation's Attic". It is that natural human sentimentality that makes most of us save Grandma's old whatever.
Unfortunately not that many of us really have that sense, so we in museums can never financially compete with celebrity entertainment. There are virtually no museum people that are 'stars'. There is no big bucks like there is in entertainment sports and film.
But I would say that it is very unfair to say that museums--even such as the Titanic are in it mainly for the money.
I'd say it is far more the joy and satisfaction of seeing or helping folks come in contact with their past...that's our job satisfaction.
And TTF you know that magic you speak of is in a LOT more folks than just kids. As a matter of fact I have seen a lot more (and more intense) wonder in the eyes of adults who come in contact with their past than I EVER do kids.

Re: IS IT RIGHT
Yes, Sig, you are quite right about most of that. But the two groups of people I am speaking of are RMS Titanic, which is a publicly-owned company, stock and all, that was formed for the express purpose of making money, and the Titanic "pirates" (Why did they call them that, they're looters for heavens sake) who were there absolutely to take what they could sell.
The one great advantage of RMST is at least that exhibit gets around to a lot of countries.

Re: IS IT RIGHT
I should like to remind the erm, "demi-gods" of the Titanic Mt. Olympus: NOBODY is an expert on TITANIC...not even the man who built and designed her, nor the men who sailed her...
