Re: IS IT RIGHT
HI Wills
One would like to think and hope that is the last of the items retrieved from the ship.
I expect more dives are planned for the future some where but lets hope they do eventually stop before it is too late

Re: IS IT RIGHT
wills, right now everything is tied up in the courts, as there is a major amount of internecine warfare going on in RMST. It's one of the reasons the pirates thought they could get away with it, everyone involved in protecting the wreck was so busy suing each other.
I imagine once the dust settles, RMST with start diving again - they have to, or the ship lies vulnerable for anyone to plunder under international law.

Even though I am no fan of RMSTI, better them than the pirates!

Re: IS IT RIGHT
Just last week I put a comment on the topic above (Ballard's concerns) regarding my views on this subject. I'm surprised no one jumped on it as I take the 'less popular' stance.
I can see some folks point, in that taking 'grave goods' is tantamount to tomb robbing, something we archaeologists have long been accused of--not without some justification I might add. Grave goods being defined as the objects of certain value placed with a body by those who inter it...usually having some significance to the person interred.
The objects on that ship are incidental material to a great tragedy, but they are NOT grave goods any more than a bent hubcap from a fatal accident is.
However, those same objects from the ship, brought to where many can see and ponder, become the cenotaph that memorializes the victims in a far broader way than they otherwise might have had.
I would much rather my mother's wedding ring be on display somewhere in the future for many to see and wonder the kind of woman she was, and what she was like, her thoughts and feelings in her final hours, and so on, than have it buried away in her tomb in near total obscurity. Even a private collection would be better.
I'm sure she would too (we actually discussed this sort of topic not long before she died).
Of course it's right to bring things up.

Re: IS IT RIGHT
Hi 7th
actually saw your mail in the Ballard thread which you remark about here, You may of course guess my opinion on this matter has not changed in the least.
I still think that bringing articles back from a grave is robbing its souls of there property, not ours or the owners but there's. I understand your point of view regarding your mothers wedding ring, I respect that as your and your mothers decision, but you had the luxury of talking and discussing it unlike the soles on the bottom of the ocean. Personally I would prefer to be buried with my wedding ring if I have one. As I would like my wife to be buried with hers. That way the token is still there.
I am sorry while I respect your decision as you well know I still do not agree with it and myself still believe nothing should of been brought up.
