What if?

Hey, what if the crew transfered all the passengers boat by boat to the same Ice Berg they hit, and waited for the resque ships to arrive?? would not that be better than drowning??

Re: What if?

hi welcome to the forum..
i belive that at the time of the disaster the iceberg was further back .

allow me to explain.
when the titanic hit the iceberg. she continued to travel.

imediately following the collisoin e.j. was on the bridge wing and looked aft. he never saw the berg . it was too dark.
also when titanic was ordered all stop she still took if im am not mistaken approximately 13 miles to stop completely.

she was i have read found about 13 miles off course. so to answer your question i doubt that they would even have thought of that. and besides with the way people were reportedly dressed that night they most likely would not have been able to withstand the cold of the iceberg.
hope this was some help.

Re: What if?

thanks wills, I did not know that the ice berg was that far from the ship, and I thought that there are many ice bergs in the vacinity of the accident.

If I was one of the passengers, I would have prefered to die on a dry land (even if it was an ice berg) than drown in a wet icey water.

Hi Titanica,

It is to long a job to go into the full logistics of the thory. But in short what Wills says is correct.

Also it is well known that after the initial stop of Titanic, she was then put to slow ahead. This also took the ship further away.

You also have to remeber a burg turns, in the water.

Graham

I did not know the size of the berg they hit...I thought it was a big mountain-like berg, besides I also thought that there were many Ice-bergs floating in the area, since the captin of the Carpentha (wrong spelling?) said that it was incredible how he traveled to the sinking site without hiting any other ice-berg.

Hi Titanica

Have a look at the link below

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/2155617.stm

This is supposed to be the ice burg that titanic hit. From the story it would also seem hard to disprove.

You also have to remember the titanic was not like a car, it could not stop as and when it wanted. its sopping distance at 20knots was approx 850 yards,777 Meters. This figure is debatable depending on source.

And true when the Carpathia was doing it's heroic dash it was in a ice field. But this is not what you may be thinking of like the arctic poles etc.

I hope this helps you

Graham

Re: What if?

Hi Wills

It sure does, I find it really interesting in parts as it is not so long ago that I read somewhere that the iceberg is still around. Now unfortunately I cannot remember where I read this. Shame as that would really get the ball rolling.

So to stat with does anyone think the iceberg is still rolling , I do think it is possible , I have read from the ice station web site, again I cant remember the ink but icebergs can live for over a hundred years.

Thanks Graham, from the pic (if it really was the Titanic-berg)I can see how it was not even an option to use it as a safe platform!

Hi Titanica

Agreed if it was the one, it would of been impossible even if it was possible. Hope that makes sense.

You also have to take into account that the iceberg does not stay stable in the water, It turns upside down at times as it melts. Also stuck to the ice is dead fish and deposits of al sorts.

Graham
