Re: If you could
I think at this point that enough has been brought up from both the ship and the debris field. There is more than enough materiel for several exhibitions and at this point I believe that the ship has told us just about everything she ever will be able to.
As for the ship being brought up, I honestly don't think it can be done, at least not with the current technology available. However, I wouldn't rule it out either.
The big problem is how to preserve whatever is left of the ship should someone manage to bring her to the surface. I personally think that is the biggest hurdle to bringing her up next to the fact that her bow section is stuck pretty fast in the ooze. Even accounting for deterioration, I should think that several thousand tons of metal remain, so I don't see how she could be raised.
W don't know for certain if those who perished would want their belongings on display and to me, since we do not know, they should be left alone.
I am not upset with items such as china, crystal, some ship parts, etc. being brought up--in any case it is a fait accompli. However I do not see a need for continued salvage at this time.

Actually I think it would be possible today, but it would not be economical nor feasible.Plus I doubt they would get away with it politically either. Then there is the cost now that would not be cheep by anyones means.

Too true they have bi problems now with preservation plus preserving a ship and artifacts are totally different in scale. I was invited to the Vasa museum last year http://www.vasamuseet.se/InEnglish/about.aspx the preservation of such a ship as this is like the Mary rose http://hnsa.org/ships/maryrose.htm is a fantastic job. As someone else has already stated the "Big Piece" is hard enough. Plus with the track record of companies who are supposed to look after these artifacts go who would trust them.
I agree with your further statements although I still do not see why they had to salvage at all.

Re: If you could
I don’t know if it is true but I have read that metal from Lusitania has found its way to scrap yards.

Re: If you could
HI Tom
Sad as it may be it does ring true unfortunately. I suppose it is cheaper than cataloging and preserving in the long run. Personally it is a shame and why not just leave it alone if this is the case
