Re: To Be an Officer

I am going to suggest this part of the discussion be curtailed here and now, or moved to "Off Topic" as that is a political discussion not an historical one.

Ues, Lee, I think that's a good idea...we are sort of digressing here anyhow...maybe over in off-topic with a caveat that this is a political issue...?

Thank you wills. Maybe someday when I'm all grown up, I can learn to do it too!

I don't know whether I am out of line posting this now--haven't followed this thread much--but I thought you all might find this interesting.
I have just looked back through some of this topic and see the comments about lady officers etc. As some of you may know, I am from one of those seafaring families (why I used to mountain climb was a mystery to everyone) and knew that even my own mother had been well versed in seamanship.
Well, a few years after she died I was sorting through some family papers and found her papers...she herself was a licensed Sea Captain! Back in the 1950's no less! Why she took the exams etc. is a mystery to me, I don't think she ever did anything with it, but it sure must have been strange for her to do something like that back then.
Mom, you never cease to surprise me!

I can think of one really good reason...to prove to herself that she could do it! At some point or other I plan to do the same thing...I'll probably never be able to stand on a bridge, but I will know that if I were younger I very well might be able to!

Or maybe to prove to someone else (my guess would be a male) either a) that she could do it, or b) she was every bit as smart and able as he was - I remember doing a lot of that, even in the 70s!
