My father said (or rather screamed) "You joined the WHAT??" I wanted to be a senior NCO of infantry (I must have read too many Sgt. Rock comic books as a kid). Took a few years (like eleven) but I finally achieved a life long ambition and became a senior sergeant in the 10th Mountain Div. Light infantry...the first of my family in the army since the Civil War (we had navy in that one too). I know it was screwy, but not many folks can say they have actually achieved a life ambition--whatever it is. Done some other ones too.nondisclosed_email@example.com (7th officer)Mon, 24 May 2004 15:57:54 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2249,from=rss#post2249https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2249,from=rss#post2249I made the Air Force.<grin>nondisclosed_email@example.com (Teamtunafish)Mon, 24 May 2004 14:51:17 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2248,from=rss#post2248https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2248,from=rss#post2248Hi Wills I wanted to be in RN as well, Passed all my qualifications for officer but got held back on medical. I have just looked back through some of this topic and see the comments about lady officers etc. As some of you may know, I am from one of those seafaring families (why I used to mountain climb was a mystery to everyone) and knew that even my own mother had been well versed in seamanship. Well, a few years after she died I was sorting through some family papers and found her papers...she herself was a licensed Sea Captain! Back in the 1950's no less! Why she took the exams etc. is a mystery to me, I don't think she ever did anything with it, but it sure must have been strange for her to do something like that back then. Mom, you never cease to surprise me!nondisclosed_email@example.com (7th officer)Sun, 23 May 2004 15:06:57 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2242,from=rss#post2242https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2242,from=rss#post2242Thank you wills. I am afraid though I am of the same thaught most of the time. I would prefere not to see women doing dangeorous jobs. Not sexist just that is what we are hear for not to send our wives or relatives to work. If the husehold can afford not to why should a woman go out to work, There is a lot of work and over oin been a house wife, And yes folks I do believe us men do not do enough around the house or when the time comes to look after children. I do not believe in women and mens work but i do believe men should care for women a lot better than they do. What you say is correct and I agree with you whole hearted Grahamnondisclosed_email@example.com (graham 01)Thu, 20 May 2004 13:23:19 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2234,from=rss#post2234https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2234,from=rss#post2234MA, that was my impression of the guy and dont worry, I would have some words for him as well. I dont doubt at all that a woman he cared for would have his blessing to pursue any dreams she may have, i was merely stating that he would not be the one to push a woman out into the work force(if he were financially adiquet). He was a fairly free minded person but also the "pull out the chair" type. I myself am a very feminine tomboy if that makes sense. I use to be a police officer before i decided to get my college degree. I dont think he would stone me for that, but at the same time I do believe he would question as to why I wanted to do that with my life, risking it everynight coming home with a busted lip and black eyes from being in fights all night in downtown newportnews which is a druggie zone and high crime rate area. I hope to all levels that I didnt say anything to offend anyone. Lately it seems I rarely say the right thing, but know that my intentions are goodnondisclosed_email@example.com (titanicangel06)Thu, 20 May 2004 05:26:56 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2233,from=rss#post2233https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2233,from=rss#post2233Hear! The last time that we sailed to 'n' from Catalina Island, which is 26 miles across the sea from the Long Beach, California coast...we had a lady Captain at the helm. Plus, upon our return to the CA coast, not only was it terribly windy, the mediocre waves rocked our ship from port-to-starboard, causing us sitting on the outside (my UK friend & I were sitting on the starboard side) to start feeling a tadbit queezy. So we moved to the center where it didn't rock so much. Once we were dockside, at our berth, and we disembarked, it took us a while to get our sea legs back. TA, I would have a beef with James Moody, b/c I don't like the idea of being treated like a China doll. Infact, I'm a tadbit of of a tomboy. And me in this life, have a great love for horses, who I feel that I was born to ride them too. I just know that Will would give me his blessings on both counts, wouldn't he, Lights? The "lady of leisure" and the stay-at-home-mom was a luxury mostly for the upper and middle class. In most working class households, it was a case of two wage-earner households...otherwise, they could not have supported their (often large) families.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Lights)Wed, 19 May 2004 18:36:14 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2230,from=rss#post2230https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2230,from=rss#post2230yeh you got a point there, sorrynondisclosed_email@example.com (titanicangel06)Tue, 18 May 2004 22:15:07 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2229,from=rss#post2229https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2229,from=rss#post2229Upper and middle class, maybe. He was the type that probably felt that men should do the dirty work and women should be delicate and treated like fine crystal. That is the impression i get when researching him anyway. I think he was free minded but would have cringed at the idea of a woman doing dirty work and having to perform tasks that may put her in danger. And i think that was the overall atittude at that time. Women were pampered and treated like they were almost breakable.nondisclosed_email@example.com (titanicangel06)Tue, 18 May 2004 02:45:30 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2227,from=rss#post2227https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2227,from=rss#post2227Think youre right...though Murdoch was pretty foree-thinking...he might go for it...not old E.J., though, I don't think.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Lights)Mon, 17 May 2004 19:10:28 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2226,from=rss#post2226https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2226,from=rss#post2226Hi lights They would possably dust it more I supose Grahamnondisclosed_email@example.com (graham 01)Mon, 17 May 2004 18:04:45 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2225,from=rss#post2225https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2225,from=rss#post2225It would be interesting to see what the bridge-lads of Titanivc would think of women officers were they able to come back and state their mind on the subject...nondisclosed_email@example.com (Lights)Mon, 17 May 2004 17:17:15 +0000 Re: To Be an Officerhttps://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2224,from=rss#post2224https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p2224,from=rss#post2224Hear! The RN wanted to allow women to work in a high rank order so made the training etc. was exactly the same but altered for the femail. It in reality made it easier for them not harder. It is still law though that a woman cannot fight on the frount line in the army or air force, and in the RN aparently they do not get sent into trouble straight away. No predgidis just the law. Also the women skippers tend to have a better ship than there mail collegues, Older sailors love it younger ones disagree. The older men prefere to have a woman as it makes the ship more homely, and they are as strickt if not strickter than there male captains.
