How would you have escaped the Titanic?

If you were onboard the Titanic when it struck the iceberg at 11:40pm, ship's time, how would you try to escape? Would you be able to get into a lifeboat? Or would you have to find some other way to get off the ship alive?

Apart from the lights from the ship, the night is pitch black. The R.M.S. Carpathia is still hours away. The night air is freezing cold and the water is a frigid 28 degrees farenheit (-2 degrees celcius).

How will you survive?

All the lifeboats are lowered into the water using ropes (called falls).

I'd get some of the empty falls and use them to tie deckchairs together.

I would have loved to helped Will Murdoch load the lifeboats on the starboard side of the ship...and stay aboard till the bitter end too. I'd tell him, you jump!? I'll jump, because I'm not going without you!!!

Once we're off the ship, I'd get him to swim with me for that piece of wreckage...for which I'd get him to climb onto it first, since he weighs more then I do. Then I would gingerly climb atop of him...waiting for 5th Officer Lowe to rescue us, in another lifeboat.

Once we're in that lifeboat, I would gladly share a blanket with Will, so that the two of us could thaw out together...

Im sure there was probably alot you could have used as some sort of raft aboard Titanic. But in that situation and with so little time, would you have time to make a raft and get it and yourself safely into the water?

The first boat did not go into the water until over an hour after the collision and at first the passengers did not know how much danger they were in.

If i was still aboard Titanic when she sunk I would not mind having the luck of Titanic's chief Baker, Charles Joughin. He was still aboard Titanic when she sunk and survived a long time in the water.

Fortifying myself with a bit of alcohol, like Charles Joughin did, might be a good idea.

First, I would get all my valuables and necessities.

Next, I would try and build a raft, using drawers from the closet in my cabin. I would get others to help me make it. We use anything wide and flat (plates, trays, etc) to paddle. Then, we lower it over the side and hop on.

Or, I'd try and get into a lifeboat.

If that were not possible, I'd plunge into the water and swim for dear life towards another lifeboat and get pulled in.

Very very VERY few.

Less than ten, I believe.

To survive the night, you HAD to get into a boat. If you couldn't get into a boat, you had to be hauled or had to swim to a boat.

And even if you got INTO a boat after being in the water, there was no garantee that it would save you. At least two people died after being dragged into boats from the water.

Basically - If you were in the water and you didn't get into a boat DAMN QUICK (and I mean QUICK - like, within five minutes), you were dead.

You didn't drown, but you froze to death. The water was VERY VERY VERY cold on the night of the sinking. 28 degrees farenheit. Or -2 degrees celcius.

I don't think I would survive the sinking! 1# I would be brain washed that the titanic was unsinkable.
2# Why would I leave an unsinkable ship for a little diggy in the middle of the ocean.
3# there was only 705-712 survivors, the odds are stacked against me.

# 548 - After sinking, Lifeboat #4 was still fairly close by. Under the direction of QM Walter Perkis, they picked up five men, two of whom later died. After Boat #4 tied up with boats 10, 12, 14, and D, Fifth Officer Harold Lowe redistributed the occupants of #14 and headed back into the mass of floundering people. Lowe was only able to rescue four, one of whom later died. ~ Page 59, in 88 1/2 AMAZING ANSWERS to your QUESTIONS about the TITANIC by Hugh Brewster & Laurie Coulter

Is what we must remember about Officer Lowe. emoticon
