Favourite White Star Ship?

What is the name of your favourite non Olympic class White Star Line ship?

I find it hard to decide but I think it might be Britannic (3) She was the last but one ship built for the White Star Line and she was the last White Star ship in service for Cunard. She was also a very modern ship and not far different from the cruise ships of today except maybe better looking. emoticon

HI Tom

I agree with your observations above, If I had to pick one I would probably go for the RMS Georgic http://www.freewebs.com/graham7760/thegeorgic.htm

There is a lot to add to this like the famous crossings of Canada's prime minister King for meetings with our PM Churchill, many troop crossings and dashes she made,

If I was to be really intrigued it would be the Naronic, But then I love a mystery, And I hope John Hemmert is still looking into this one as he is IMHO the best person to ask about anything to do with this ship.

I think the White Star Line would have lasted longer if they had not merged with and been taken over by Cunard and had built more ships like Georgic and Britannic.

Britannic was populor until she went for scrap at the end of 1960 and I'm sure Georgic would have been the same if it was not for her war damage.

I Tom

I totally agree in fact the WSL would of lasted a lot longer had it not merged with Morgan. Work it out this is when there demise started.

The line should of stayed in the hands of the Ismays

I think the White Star Line was a successful company until after the problems caused by the 1927 take over the line by the Royal mail group and then the depression but I think that the line could have survived if they had built more ships like Britannic (3) and had the right management. Bruce Ismay was apparently interested in buying the line and doing that but it was too late by then and the merger with Cunard went ahead.

HI Tom

I totally agree with you, If the Co had reverted back to Ismay it would more than likely still be in business.

If they had built Oceanic (3) and especially if Cunard had not built Queen Mary I think the White Star Line would be similar to Cunard today or P &O.

Mine would have to be the RMS Tayleur, which launched from Warrington (where I now live) on this day 160 years ago. But I am *slightly* biased seeing as I've just written a book on her. She sank two days into her maiden voyage, in 1854, on Lambay (just off the coast of Dublin). Tragic story, but compelling. The museum here has one of her portholes and some of the crockery from her hold.
