Re: Tis different
Hi TTf
About a year or maybe two ago ebay where selling some morgue photos of people of the titanic. The photos where put up for auction with full authentisity. Many complained and the sale was stoped.
I saw the photos and they where grusum.

Re: Tis different
I have seen lots of historic dead bodies during the course of my work. They are studied because of the historical setting from which they came--clothing, grave goods, burial techniques, and so on...but I didn't get just WHY these were to be displayed.
Also I have heard of those Titanic dead photos...actually I wouldn't mind seeing them for various reasons.
I think the creepiest dead photos I have seen (that pertains to our interest) were taken by divers who went inside a ship that had JUST sank and the bodies were still floating near the ceilings of the cabins and the sea creatures hadn't yet gotten to them...brrrrr....

Re: Tis different
HI 7th
You are not talking of the Kirsk are you. I mysellf have seen many pictures of dead and fresh bodys but I find it hard to believe some would make it a profit idea.
I agree there is actually nothing wrong with it in itsellf as lets face it we all die one day. The pictures where actually on the net on a web site as well but sorry cannot think where at the minuet if I remeber I will let you all know.

Re: Tis different
I can't remember off hand which ship it was--I could find out tonight as I have some of them (now aren't you guys glad I don't have a scanner!). I think the ship was in the Gulf of Mexico--I'll check if you want.
No, these photos were definitely not for profit. The Titanic ones could be sold for profit now because of the historical nature of the thing.
My interest in those would be primarily the clothing etc. worn rather than gazing into the faces of the dead. I don't get off on that...although I can understand a little bit of the 'Yorick' syndrome when looking at the dead.
At an archaeological museum conference (I go to many of those for work)I spoke at some length with the US Army forensic team that identified the 'Unknown Soldier' of Vietnam (there are none now--the tomb is empty) about having to look at and sometimes get quite close to dead folks and how you can't help but wonder what they were like and what they thought etc.
Right here in our archaeological storage 'bin' just a block or so from my lab, we keep the remains of all the unidentified 'John Does' (bones only) of unsolved cases in the state. There are shelves of them. Every once in a while the forensic people want to get one of them out for examination, so...well you know the rest. But they are just bones--sometimes with gruesome wounds though (an axe through the head for instance).
Actually my ladyfriend who was a pretty good archaeologist says that the only time she gets 'queezed out' is when the bodies are 'fresh' enough (burial conditions) where the hair etc. is still present.
Ah, enough of this conversation.

Re: Tis different
Hi 7th
Wow an interesting place it sounds near you, I now have a vision of a cor[pse with a axe resting in its head.
I would be interested in the ships name if you can,
I also agree anything to do with the Titanic eventualy raises its head as a profit item. I am just not sure what a person would do with a picture of a corpse in a coffin, Not the type of thing to hang in the living room or study. But then again there are people who do have a makarb sence of humour I supose and may find somewhere to hang them. It was not the content of the photos that ebay where against I dont think but the shear number of complaints recieved. Or there may of been a copyright infringement of course.
Great to have you back anyway 7th and look forword to your posting again

Re: Tis different
I'll try to dig out the sunken ship photos this evening for that ship's name.
The axe wound I mentioned was a 40 something year old woman found in the woods...and the creepy thing is that the bones exhibited a number of equally traumatic wounds--that had partly healed--different amounts! In other words this woman, whoever she was, had been grievously injured, healed somewhat, and even more grievously injured again and again over a period of years it seems...until the axe finally finished it. What a story! I'm not a forensic anthropologist or osteologist so I couldn't get the full appreciation of it, but to me it was really creepy just the same.
The last time I was over there they had a middle aged Mexican male laid out (just bones on the table). I believe someone said he had been murdered and found somewhere, but I didn't pay attention as I was there for other reasons (artifacts).
I think it has been mentioned here or somewhere (TTF was in on the conversation) that in the 19th century photos of dead loved ones were quite popular--particularly dead babies. I have a couple of them myself somewhere in my junk...tintypes with little gold frames. War heros and bad guys were popular too.
This was the same time when you had pictures of your loved one's tombstone framed in your livingroom and folks made jewelry out of dead people's hair and so on.
As for photgraph copywrite. Most photo copywrites expire in 50 years, so virtually all Titanic photos (unless something new turns up) are now in public domain just as are WWII photos.
