And some of the smaller ones - say, the ones now plying the Mediterranean or the Hawaiian Islands - are still small and remarkably like the old Atlantic ferry.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Teamtunafish)Wed, 14 Jul 2004 21:28:57 +0000 Re: Modern Shi-s--Ladies or Tramps?https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1104,from=rss#post1104https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1104,from=rss#post1104It's sad to have to say it Wills, but unfortunately, we shall not see the likes of White Star's and Cunard's lovely Ladies of old. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Lights)Wed, 14 Jul 2004 17:22:48 +0000 Re: Modern Shi-s--Ladies or Tramps?https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1103,from=rss#post1103https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1103,from=rss#post1103as i am nmost certainly far from being an authority here on this subject.... i have to say lights is right .. they just dont make them like they use to. however tech. has changed and so hav ethe times. the steel back then can not be provided today. it is a different era all together. but it would be nice to see our ladies of the past sailing across the ocean. you put them all side by side and the ladies of the past will always come out on top. it is also as graham has said. qm2 is a lovely ship but it does look like an ice skate ready to topple over at any time. but to each his own. i do know one thing .. that if tom andrews was here he most certainly would have been very intrigued by the newer vessels. and im sure he could have rediesgned a new titanic olympic and brittanic .. but oh well better leave those to the dream land. wills nondisclosed_email@example.com (wills)Tue, 13 Jul 2004 23:02:39 +0000 Re: Modern Shi-s--Ladies or Tramps?https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1102,from=rss#post1102https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1102,from=rss#post1102The old ships were built for a different purpose, so of course they looked different - not to mention the technology has changed significantly. Comparing them is apples and oranges, not really fair for either side.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Teamtunafish)Sun, 11 Jul 2004 20:59:38 +0000 Re: Modern Shi-s--Ladies or Tramps?https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1101,from=rss#post1101https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1101,from=rss#post1101HI Lights A very good point my friend, The modern day ships like the QMII to me look like a ice skate waiting to topple over. The old ships had a look of class and distinction to them. Having never been on a cruise ship other than the United States once while in dock, I really am not too much of a judge. Back then steamers were the way to get accross the ocean and everyone took them. The main purpose was to GET there--the amenities were almost incidental--but plentiful for those who could afford them. Still the main purpose was to get where you're going...just have a good time while you're cooped up traveling. Today cruise ships are really nothing more than floating resort hotels...the traveling--therefore the speed, sleekness, and power, etc. is not important--but the amenities are the main thing. You're not cooped up traveling, but the ship itself is the main point of the thing. So really you cannot compare the two as they are actually two different things with two different purposes. It's like apples and oranges. So whether something is lost or something gained I guess is all depends on what you're looking for. I would not like to have to get to Europe for a vital business deal on a modern cruise ship, but at the same time I don't know as a fun filled vacation could be as well had on the typical (not Titanic or her ilk) steamer of that day.nondisclosed_email@example.com (7th officer)Fri, 09 Jul 2004 13:00:25 +0000 Modern Shi-s--Ladies or Tramps?https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1098,from=rss#post1098https://btomdyerstitanicsitecommunity.runboard.com/p1098,from=rss#post1098I did not know quite where to put this but I think this is as good a spot as any. I would like to know your opinion of the products of modern shipbuilding versus ships like, oh say, Titanic, Lusitania, OceanicII, Rex. Homeric, QM etc? My opinion is that THOSE were ladies and that modern ships just don't make it to ladyhood the way the aforementioned Ladies managed to. Yes, I know times have changed and basically ships are made to cart as many people out to sea as possible and hop port-to-port with entertainment and gambling in between, but something has definitely been lost here, I think. So, what's your opinion? Have your say!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Lights)Fri, 09 Jul 2004 12:08:54 +0000
