IDEA'S FOR FUTURE CONVENTIONS, ANYONE STILL AROUND WITH A CONNECTION TO THE TITANIC, OLYMPIC ?

Just found out there are only 2 Lusitania survivors alive today.

Anyway Just a thought, but why can't these Titanic clubs track down people whom travelled on these ships for future conventions? What about people who were on the Maiden voyage of the Olympic? Yes it was a year before the Titanic and a very long time ago. But if there are people still alive from the Titanics maiden voyage with such a huge loss of life then surly/logically there would be more still alive from the Olympics maiden voyage. That would be a huge attraction for a convention. After all Olympic was the one that left Southampton with the blaze of publicity because as we know she was the first of the big three.

What about people who visited the Titanic when she was open to the public? Or people who saw the launch ? Or perhaps saw her set off on her maiden voyage or on Sea trials? I read loads of fascinating anecdotes in the book Titanic Voices. Just little stories from people who were actually there and saw the Titanic leave Southampton, what they thought and what they said. Where are these people and why do they not come fourth? There were probably more people who saw the Titanic leave Southampton, visited the Titanic when open to the public, saw her being launched than people whom travelled on her.

Let us please forget about the Great Great Great Grand daughter of Edith Haisman by marriage signing postcards and the like !!! I find that an insult to ones intelligence and cant believe some people want such a thing. Lets try and get the people I mentioned to come to conventions. They are out there. After all they must have come forward when Titanic Voices was being written, unless the author got these fascinating anecdotes from other sources and not first hand.

I tried a very feeble attempt many years ago to try and track down people whom travelled on the maiden voyage of the Olympic by putting an advert in the Sea Breezes magazine. Horrible magazine full of modern cross chanel ferries. Yuk. Anyway of course these people would not have read this magazine but I was only young at the time. I did get a response from someone whom was happy that there were young people that showed an interest in the great liners. He had travelled on both the Queen Mary and her sister. But that to me is a bit like Millvinas signature - a penny a dozen, no offence.... My mum could have gone on the Queen Mary in the 1960s. It was not what I was looking for. The Queen Mary just missed the classic liner period for me.

Anyway if there are people from Titanics first trip there must be people still around who were on the maiden voyage of the Olympic with GREAT storys to tell. Plus people who have a better first hand connection with the Titanic other than grand daughters etc.

I suppose it is just a matter of tracking them down. Maybe someone has ? Dose anyone know anyone in this league. I would be grateful for any information but I doubt any of this will bare fruit.

I am not sure what section to post this topic in. Hence as I am talking about the Olympic I will post there also emoticon

I hope Millvina gets better.

As the Olympic had a long life and this topic is about crew and passengers - surly there must be crew memebers of the Olympic still around from the 1930's even 1920's.
These are people that should be going to the conventions now the Titanic survivors are nearly all gone. A crew memeber of the Olympic would have all sorts stuff to talk about to memebers - very much so if he worked on the ship.

Can anyone help me get intouch with anyone like this ? I'm sure they are not hounded like the Titanic survivors are.....

Hi Miles

Thank you for a delightful post, I see we may be from the same breed of researchers type of thing. This is a short reply and I have to agree that your post really should warrant a lengthily response.

I agree with you whole heartedly that this type of line should be followed. I like you tried at one point to connect with people from the Olympic class ships and not just titanic for the same reason you mention , I have to admit I did not go to the length of advertising at that time. I did and am still in contact with some members who do indeed know people from this era.

The main problem to these people is the titanic societies themselves, they look down on other crew members who are not titanic related. Making them not so welcome to there selective attractions.

I am in contact with a person who is directly involved with a ship from the same era as Titanic. he sailed aboard another ship but not WSL. The stories he tells are fascinating and very interesting. But he went to a convention expecting people to listen to what he had to say and he was snubbed. Now this gent was at the young tender age of 95 at the time. He travelled from North of England to Southampton booked in at the hotel to be told he was not welcome in a way as to be snubbed.

I do agree with you though and if I can be of any help please let me know.

Graham

I can't think why they snubbed him... That's a bit rude. I'm sure an Olympic crew memeber would be of great interest. My dad had me a bit late ( i was born in 77 ) but he was alive in during the last 3 years of the Olympic's life so I can't see why there would not be somone around from that period. Wonder where you would start looking for these people. Funny if the BBC were doing a film documentary about the Olympic then they would prob find all sorts of people from the Olympic. Wonder how they do it ?

Anyways Yoko Ono could have even have gone on the Olympic....She was alive then also emoticon lol sorry just my sense of humour !!!!!

no she is from around my area. as far as i know she isnt . however i can have my mom ask her because the womans mother in law had her things shipped to america from england to america on the titanic. she apparently found out she had won the lottery or some kind of inheritance not sure and she had all her stuff shipped over .

so it was on titanic when it sank.

. i dont really get to talk to her that much but would like too.
she is very nice person.

Hi Wills

While I am down south this time I will be visiting a lady of 100, she had her birthday in Febuary this year . She is a direct descendant to one of the crew of Titanic and she can still tell you the coulour of the wallpaper in the room at the time, She is a fantastic person.
