Re: Is it really authentic?
Of course it is...depending on its packaging. I'm sure there is ample room for forgeries.
I myself own two boxes...one from Ebay, one from the Titanic exhibition.

Re: Is it really authentic?
I personally would advise buying the coal from a Titanic exhibit. It's about $16-20 bucks at the exhibit as well and you know it's authentic. However IF on ebay it's got a black Titanic Coal box and a COA chances are it's authentic.
Here's a link to a site that sells the coal (and other Titanic things but they are WAY over priced)
http://www.titanicmemorabilia.co.uk/titanic-90th-coal.html
If on ebay it looks like the first photo and the box looks like the second photo then it is most likely authentic and someone bought extras at an exhibit and are now selling them on ebay.

Re: Is it really authentic?
Hi All
I once did a real long post on the coal, I cannot see why someone would want a piece of coal that technically you cannot say for sure it was of the Titanic.
Titanic like so many other ships of the time used real Welsh top quality coal. But we all know coal is found on the sea bed anyway made from fossils. So my argument is how do they know it was Titanic coal?

Re: Is it really authentic?
you have a good point there graham.
how do they know it is for sure titanic coal?
they don't ....
why would they want it anyway?
to have a 'piece' of history....
i would not want any coal because of forgery and things i woudl not get it even directly from the wreck myself...
it is stealing and very wrong....
that is my thought on the subject.

Re: Is it really authentic?
Hi Wills
Good clear thoughts as well. If you consider wood turns to coal, admittedly takes a long long time but how much wood was on Titanic. a lot of it rotted away and eaten by micro's etc. There must be tons of coal at the bottom of the ocean.

Re: Is it really authentic?
If I am not mistaken, pictures taken for Ghosts of the Abyss were the last pics! Not 100% sure though!

Hi Titanica
I am sure you are right with this but I will get to check one day, seems life is busy at the moment again and days too short.
