I did not stay long on the Naronic, because it disappeared quickly without a trace back in 1893! That's why it takes 5 postings only emoticon

Hi Titanica

Do you now I had not thought about the time it stays on certain ships in reality to time in service.

Good thinking there.

Does the settings alter by time or trips I wonder?

Regards
Graham

It alters by the number of posts you send. I read that in the "member titles" post in the "offtopic" section!

Hi All,

Graham, glad to be aboard! (Heh! Yup. WSL1909, as that's the shipping line and year of its history that I'm rather fixated on, eh?) heh! I'm still an amateur, I believe. I'm not yet "published", nor have I yet worked on a large scale paying contract, nor made into a documentary. We'll see, I guess!

Tom, I look forward to hearing from you, I'm sure we'll both have a good time, and do a bit of learning as well. I'd been wanting to do a website regarding "Naronic" for quite some time now, but I simply haven't had the time or facility to do it. So, helping you will be great. I'll be quite happy to give you what I've got on her, as it will then, finally, make it onto the net.

Hi Titanica! And thanks for the welcome! Boring? To other nautical history enthusiasts? I doubt that. Me, I'm interested first and foremost in the old "transitional" style ships of the 1870-1910 period. (They carried both sails and had steam engines with propellors.) But, I am also interested in the older sailing vessels, and newer ships as well. (All the way up until they started looking like floating doorstops, that is.)

You'll find the "Bovic" interesting, I'm sure. Not only was she one of "Naronic's" sisters, they used her for stability tests after the "Naronic" vanished to try and see if "Naronic" capsized. The findings were that she probably didn't. Also, several "pictures" of the "Naronic", that I've seen, are actually of the "Bovic", with just the name changed. My, my... looks like you haven't really quite gotten off the "Naronic" yet, eh?

 Best regards!
 John.

Hi John

Looks like we are both well in the amateur book then my friend. But it depends how you look at the word amateur I suppose. Me I will always be a amateur as I don't really specialise in one ship, well not often anyway.

I am so glad though that we definitely think alike about the style of ships. At least a good old steamer looks like a ship not as you so elegantly put it "door stop" . Got my own word for them but not really repeatable on boards.

I suppose there is a lot to be said for technology but ship design like train design is not one of them. Even the tall ships had character and style. I still watch with pleasure to see the likes of the Endevor in full sail come into Whitby and indeed Middlesbrough fireing cannons to port. Or the smoke from a stack on a old steam ship coming down into the basin for repair just up the road from me. Yes there is still steam ships about not many bet they are still working. The last one here was a Russian ship in bad need for repair.

Regards
Graham
