Not to be picky or anything (trans: Lee's being picky again), but I don't think Ballard founded Titanic- I think he discovered it. In the news buisness, there's a word for this sort of thing - it's called a mistake.
As I laid in bed thinking about this this morning, it suddenly dawned on me that still yet another undersea explorer found Titanic before Ballard did. And wasn't he none other than Jacques Cousteau?
But quite unlike his successor, Cousteau and his team did not exactly go down to explore the wreck herself, like Ballard did, although he had the equipment which to do so. Or rather, it could be that his was not as sophisticated as Ballard's.
Anyrate, Cousteau might very well have been the granddaddy behind the start of the many Titanic explorations to come...as well as the true inspiration behind Ballard becoming an undersea explorer himself. Huh!?

Re: Titanic Founder Fears for Future of Great Wreck
Hi Tammy
I think you may be mistaken here Jack Coustou did not find the titanic, A story with some proof has been around though that a UK RN ship did find her before BAllard but this is so confused at the oment it is not sure as far as evidnce goes.
Jack Coustou was a very god friend of a man called Higgins though a very rich batchelor of NY who was a good friend of Clinch Smith.

Re: Titanic Founder Fears for Future of Great Wreck
Where I saw this, was on the History Channel, Graham...that is why my memory about Cousteau is so vivid. It all appears in still another yet R. Ballard special expedition, for which he was interviewed, for which he mentions this famous underwater sea explorer. For which the camera crew were invited inside Ballard's home.
Also, quite unrelated to Ballard, someone brought up a piece of Titanic, so that they could conduct tests on this piece of steel...to find out exactly what it was made of, as well as to find any faults in the way it was made. That was when I used to live in Southern California.
They could have been the RMST, Inc., whom may have brought up that piece...after their original attempt to bring up that larger chunk failed. But as we all know, they finally were successful at bringing up that huge chunk from Titanic's starboard side back hull.

Re: Titanic Founder Fears for Future of Great Wreck
The Big Piece is now touring with the RMST exhibit, so I think it belongs to them, yes.
Cousteau only dove to about 200 feet. His son only went to about 35800, no where near what Titanic was.

Re: Titanic Founder Fears for Future of Great Wreck
Thank you, TTF, for confirming that for me, re: Jacques Cousteau and his team.
I knew I was not imagining things, and I did say "...and his team" - and the last time I checked, his son definitely was apart of his team, wasn't he? He even tried to carry on way after his father passed away, didn't he?

Now, now gosip isn't nice - but boy is it tasty. Yes, he did, and there was a serious failure there. Must be awful to be a son of such a man - the shoes are huge.

Re: Titanic Founder Fears for Future of Great Wreck
Just a question...didn't RMSTI bring up "the Big Piece"?
