Not to be picky or anything (trans: Lee's being picky again), but I don't think Ballard founded Titanic- I think he discovered it. In the news buisness, there's a word for this sort of thing - it's called a mistake.

How about, if one were to drop the "ed" off of found, which were to interprit it as saying, that Bob Ballard found her...which would mean the same as he discovered her? Does that sound better?

Well, I could kid you about a teacher talking to me about this - yes, he found her but he didn't found her, etc. - but the thing is, he was the finder of the ship, not the founder of same.

BY ANDREW HERRMANN Staff Reporter Advertisement

Asked recently about the popularity of a new exhibit, a Museum of Science and Industry official responded positively -- but added "it's no Titanic.''

Indeed, two tours of artifacts from the sunken ship drew 1 million visitors to the museum in 2000 and 2002. The tale of the 1912 sinking of the unsinkable Titanic -- fueled first by dramatic newspaper accounts and later by blockbuster movies -- is irresistible.

Perhaps too irresistible.

6,000 artifacts taken

Robert Ballard, the man who discovered the Titanic in the North Atlantic in 1985, estimates that 6,000 artifacts are now gone from its underwater resting place, swiped by "treasure hunters."

The ship's bell has been ripped from the vessel's mast "where lookout Frederick Fleet first spotted the fatal iceberg'' that doomed the ship. The brass light is missing. The Titanic, swallowed about 1,000 miles east of Boston, also shows bump marks from submersible vessels. A gash rips across the bow where the name Titanic used to be.

"Damaged and picked over, Titanic is less of a ship now than two decades ago,'' writes Ballard in his new book Return to Titanic, published by National Geographic.

Ballard argues that the Titanic and other historically significant wrecks should be preserved as historic sites. "The deep sea is the Earth's biggest museum, yet there is no lock on the door,'' he writes.

Other side of the story

For their part, museums and exhibit companies argue that undersea artifacts eventually disintegrate. By retrieving them for display, museums preserve the pieces as educational tools.

Ballard, who revisited the ship last summer, proposes that the Titanic could become a "virtual museum'' wired to allow people to view it from their home computers. Last week, he was in Washington lobbying Congress to approve a treaty that would ban unauthorized dives.

His view of the artifacts marks a change. After his 1985 trip, he told Congress that the intact sections of the Titanic should remain undisturbed but that the items such as brass buttons and cherub statues scattered around the ocean floor should be recovered and put on display. "I wish I could take it back,'' Ballard now says.

He now considers the Titanic a graveyard.

Scavenging the ship area is akin to "taking belt buckles or wristwatches off the U.S.S. Arizona'' in Pearl Harbor or removing "personal effects from the site of the World Trade Center'' 9/11 terrorist attack, Ballard writes.

Ballard never took any Titanic items, which, ironically, may have hindered his effort to preserve the site.

"Thanks to twists of maritime law, American courts ruled that my team did not 'officially' discover Titanic because we did not bring back any part of the ship,'' he says.

If he had, Ballard writes, he could have won exclusive rights to the ship and protected it any way he wished.
