Bid to buy 'mother ship' of Titanic
A proposal has been made to buy the SS Nomadic

By David Gordon
[email protected]

13 September 2004
Belfast City councillors are seeking a meeting with a Government minister in a last-ditch bid to salvage a ship with strong links to the Titanic.

But the council has baulked at spending money on the 93-year-old vessel in the absence of a financial commitment from other organisations.

The Belfast-built SS Nomadic, described as the Titanic's mother ship, is currently lying in the French port of Le Havre and is due to be auctioned off on September 20.

City councillors have been exploring the idea of bringing the ship back to Belfast as a potential tourist attraction.

They have been informed that around £0.5m would be needed to buy the Nomadic and move it to Northern Ireland.

It is estimated that the bill for fully restoring the vessel would come to £7m.

The City Council has approached the Department for Culture and other organisations about co-funding the Nomadic's purchase.

But there has been no positive response to the proposal and councillors have now unanimously voted to go directly to Culture Minister Angela Smith.

UUP members this week pushed for a City Hall decision to allocate £166,000 towards acquiring the Nomadic.

But this move was defeated by a combination of DUP and Sinn Fein votes.

DUP member Ian Crozier hit out at the "ridiculous" idea of the council pursuing the project.

He asked if it would also be proposed to buy the Tower Bridge "because some Ulsterman laid a brick on it".

He added: "The money is not there in the budget to start blowing it on this carry-on."

The PUP's David Ervine criticised Mr Crozier's "disparaging" remarks while Ulster Unionist Michael McGimpsey accused the DUP man of "immaturity".

The Nomadic is the last remaining White Star ship built in Belfast. A maritime museum in Cherbourg is also interested in buying it.

Council sinks bid to return 'Titanic link' ship

By David Gordon
[email protected]

21 September 2004
Former minister Michael McGimpsey today rounded on fellow city councillors over their failure to back a bid for a ship with strong links to the Titanic.

The Belfast-built SS Nomadic, described as the Titanic's mother ship, was listed for auction in France yesterday.

The Belfast Titanic Society was today seeking information on the outcome of the sale, while voicing deep disappointment that it will not be coming home to Northern Ireland.

The City Council recently debated launching a bid for the 93-year-old vessel.

But pessimism was voiced over the prospects of other bodies helping to finance the acquisition.

It was estimated that buying the Nomadic and bringing it to Belfast would cost £0.5m, while the bill for complete restoration would come to £7m.

A UUP proposal at City Hall to allocate £166,000 towards the purchase price was voted down by a combination of DUP and Sinn Fein councillors earlier this month.

A subsequent approach to Culture Minister Angela Smith over a jointly-funded bid proved unsuccessful.

Mr McGimpsey, a city councillor and former Culture Minister, today accused the DUP and Sinn Fein of taking a "blinkered approach".

He said: "If the council wasn't prepared to put up £166,000, why would the Minister bother wasting her time talking to us?

"There's always money if you come up with a good scheme. Right now, the Minister does not have a scheme in front of her.

"They have given the Minister an excuse. The failure to show intent indicated that City Hall was not serious."

Terry Madill from the Belfast Titanic Society today said finance could have been forthcoming from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other sources.

He added: "The society is disappointed with the lack of vision and apathy of public bodies to the potential of capitalising on Belfast's Titanic heritage."

Re: NOMADIC

This just in (I have really neat spies) "The auction of the Nomadic did not go ahead yesterday. The owner got a court injunction to delay it until the 22nd of November and they will take bids up to 1 minute before the time."

More details as they are announced.
