Re: Tacky and Tasteless Titanic Collectibles

Wow, You know I SAW one of those things (the slide) just this week! I was going to mention it, but just never got around to it. It must have been the bigger one because it was just that--seemed as high as the telephone poles.
I pass it on the way to and from work and they have it deflated in the morning but when I go home in the afternoon, there it is--couldn't believe it when I first saw it. I said I just HAVE to tell you all about it. (Hmmm, maybe I should just sneak by and try it out one qafternoon....)

Hey Sig, glad to see you back!

Do not, repeat not try the thing....you will find yourself on the decks of Titanic - I had nightmares for weeks after I tried it!

It was at the Tet Festival the local Vietnamese give - for some reason these particular slides are very big in oriental countries.

So what's it like? How does it work (how do you get up it etc.)? I assume there should be a huge tub of icewater at the bottom that you land in.

Re: Tacky and Tasteless Titanic Collectibles

It's basically just a slide (although there is an attachment to make it a water slide) - and believe it or not, two types of bottoms. Mine had an iceberg on the bottom - I tried to explain to people why that was wrong. (Hint: do not do this to a bunch of Vietnamese standing in line at a Tet festival....I don't think half of them spoke English, and the other half were obviously thinking "What's with this broad?" )

Thing was, this was at night, and they had the slide so you slid into a dark area so you didn't see the bottom, with nothing else to really see as it faced the (dark) woods, so it became very real to me...

Well, on the other hand, one way of dealing with tragedies such as Titanic, the space shuttles, etc., is humor. I find it quite intriguing that there have been no jokes about the Twin Towers, although I assure you, in 100 years, there will be, it's a way of distancing yourself from the event. "Sick" humor is a very good coping tool, suprisingly. And this slide, like the little skulls with the Titanic berets and the other little things, is a way of doing this. So in a way, this is kind of healthy.

I don't know. I'd keep thinking of those people in the Cameron movie that you saw sliding to their dooms as the ship lifted up--even more graphic than the survivor's descriptions.
But basicly I do agree...and I am by far tasteless enough that if the thing was fun I wouldn't care WHAT it looked like.
I'd go on it.
If when you went on it they had it set up so you slid into the dark, I would DEFINITELY have ice water at the bottom...now there's a surprise!
