Oh, Flower of Scotland When will we see your like again That fought and died for Your wee bit hill and glen And stood against them Proud Edward's army And sent them homeward Tae think again Those days are gone now And in the past they must remain But we must stand up And be the nation again Who stood against them Proud Edward's army And sent them homeward Tae think again This was adopted a few years ago as Scotland's unofficial anthem (to take the place of the dire "God Save the Queen" which was actually written against the Scots - the third verse begins "Long may she crush the Scots"). The words "Flower" refer to the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 when, starving and vastly outnumbered, our troops were led by Robert the Bruce to a famous victory over Edward II. This is the battle which is briefly referred to at the end of Mel Gibson's Braveheart and was revenge for the years of torture and abuse we suffered at the hands of Edward I (Patrick McGoohan's character) who was known as The Hammer of the Scots. There is nothing surer to stir the blood than a few verses of "Flower of Scotland" - especially when we meet England at rugby or soccer!!! You can tell that I am very patriotic!! I love my country. ... She sent it to me via email. MAnondisclosed_email@example.com (MurdochsAid)Sat, 02 Jul 2005 18:50:57 +0000
