Re: The Olympic Class Ships: Olympic, Titanic & Britannic
Hi!
The Amazon 'October' e-mail alarmed me too, so here's the short story. (I tried to access ET earlier but could not -- so I've sent a longer explanation to Remco Hillen and asked him to post it on my behalf.)
Quote:
Mark C., what's up?
Until a few days ago, I'd been told June was the final date -- after several weeks' delay from April. However, while on the phone to my publisher the day before yesterday he said that printing was about to get underway. Allowing for a few weeks after that, we'd be looking at sometime in August before people who've ordered the UK version get it. (I was assured by phone this morning that October was only given out as a 'very worst case' scenario, since there have been so many publication dates I've lost track of them.)
Half the first print run has sold-out in pre-orders, which is excellent news, but it's only because it has sold relatively well that my book has been prioritised at all -- for there's a printing backlog. I was astonished it had done so well considering that they haven't properly started marketing it yet (there are a number of avenues that have not been done so far). I got the impression that my editor was doing his best to get it going. After all, the cover went to the printers in April. If it hadn't sold as well as it has, it would likely be further behind still in time. The best thing to do to ensure it arrives in good time is to buy more copies (but then, I would say that, wouldn't I? ) As far as I know, my Olympic book should still be out in October, but I just hope that sells well enough to allow it to be prioritised and meet that date (it might be another few months later); judging from Amazon's sales rankings, it seems to be doing better than the first one, so that makes a good case for it. It's harder as a new author -- perhaps if my name was well known it would make things less prone to delays.
It is most dissapointing for me, since the manuscript (essentially finished since 2001) has been with the publisher since January 2003, and the originally hoped-for date was July 2003. It's also unfortunate that, up until a few days ago, I had been assuring people in good faith that it was about to be published; for I didn't know anything better myself. It would be good to hear from other authors, but my impression so far is that authors essentially have no input or influence with the publication process. I wish I had known more, and then I'd have been able to keep everyone more up-to-date. But, I can't do anything to speed things up.
There is one book of mine that will be dispatched in days -- although it's on an entirely different subject .

I only finished it in March.
Meanwhile, I'm writing over the summer. That will keep me busy and take my mind off it!
Kindest regards,
Mark.

Re: The Olympic Class Ships: Olympic, Titanic & Britannic
Having done this a couple of times with my husband's books , I'm about to tell you something you do not want to hear - yup, you guessed it - your tale's not terribly unusual. However, that kind of pre-sale is - of course, what I know is science fiction, which this notably is not, but that really is amazing - especially for a first-time author, so you get VERY big congratulations there. Now when is this puppy due out this side of the pond, or do I need to do the Amazon.uk thing again?

Hi Mark
Knowing that a publisher is a law to himsellf I know how difficult it is to make a date. I do know what you mean by established names as they take the prority over new names all the time.
But As a person who has his name down already I hope to se the book soon then.

Well, it looks as if I'm just doing the old Amazon UK thing - for the rest of my fellow Yanks, you can order through them and they charge an extra $5.00 for shipping - invaluable when you want a book not available in US bookstores!

HI TTf
It is a shame that the book wont be out in the next month, or I could of saved you the extra postage.
