I object to them going into the wreck and removing personal items, but have no problem with loose items lying on the ocean floor.

While I do understand that people do not like to have a grave disturbed, I also find it sad if said grave is alos forgotten, and bringing up and exhibiting the Titanic artifacts is one way to ensure it doesn't happen to her.

No. I don't feel it's right at all to bring things up from Titanic. As someone already said, it is a gravesite to 1500 people. In no way should it be disturbed. Just think, would you want someone salvaging your grave after you are gone? I think not.

I say taking from the debris field is ok, but leave the poor ship alone.

I, too, believe that if ANYTHING more is taken from TITANIC, it should be from the debris field only, and nothing of a personal nature, such as valises, jewelry, etc.
I remember years ago seeing a TITANIC special where uniform buttons had been brought up and restored for display and my only thought was: "Egads! Hope those came off the coat Lightoller scuttled and not from some poor officer who ended up on the bottom!"

It is personal items which disturb me the most, and even ship parts have begun to get on my nerves as well. We have likely learned all that we ever WILL learn from recovered ship parts ( e.g., "the Big Piece" ), so the best thing in my view is to now let what is in essence a mass grave in peace. Come down, take pictures, pay your respects, but leave with NOTHING but pictures and memories...

I have mixed feelings on this - I respect where everyone stands, but I do think that we need some objects (preferrably from the debris field) to research and display to further inform people of this disaster. I find it difficult to accept just the numerous facts about the tragedy. When I see pictures of atrifacts, I can grasp that it actually happened, instead of just reading about stuff. It just makes it very real to me to see actual objects that were on the liner. It is so much more memorable and genuine.
I recognize that it is a hallowed mass grave and should be treated like a deliate cemetery, but I think artifacts are essential. And we've been digging in tombs in Egypt for hundreds of years to recover artifacts, so I believe that we should take relics respectfully and leave those personal items which do represent humans directly, such as spectacles, shoes, etc.

ok i'll try to keep this short lol.

i have always thought of it this way.
think of being at dinner or something with your family and all of a sudden the door flies open and here are these people helping themselves to whatever they wanted while you and your family sat there and couldnt do anything about it. how would that make you feel.
it would suck. just because it is there doesnt mean that it is for the taking. yes the wreck should be preserved but in the end it is like any other wreck. it will all eventually be gone. what if your child had a favorite teddy bear and they took it. you never heard where they were taking it and you never see it again. but once for these people wasnt enough they had to come back 5 or 6 times . just rummaging through your things. taking whatever they wanted. then as far as the debri feild ... hey let's checkout your shed in the backyard. see how much lawn equipment they have that we can take. they can prserve titanic by photos . if those people are 'down' on titanic then maybe those things are all they have of their families and so on. i think and always will think it is wrong to take from them.
no matter what.
