It means Royal Mail Ship or (in our case) Royal Mail Steamer. Any ship carrying mail from Britain is so designated - the US equivelent is USS, United States Ship (or Steamer).

No, any British (includes Scotland, Ireland, and Wales) ship that carries mail is RMS.

Hello, Teamtunafish---

I think the title "USS" is limited to ships of the United States Navy, just as "HMS" is reserved for Royal Navy ships. One occasionally sees the designation "USMS" (United States Mail Ship) used in old advertisements and the like, but it's not very common. In Titanic's time, there were relatively few US ships engaged in international trade---on the North Atlantic, for example, only the four ships of the American Line, I think---so most American mail was carried by British and German ships, just like most of the passengers were. And even when carrying US mail eastbound, the British ships used the RMS designation.

I stand corrected. Interesting that we really never had the seperate ships, but I'll bet that the US figured as long as the other countries had theirs we didn't need them.
