posticon Queen Mary 2: Birth of a Legend

The Discovery Channel introduced a brand new two-hour documentary on TV last night, titled--Queen Mary 2: Birth of a Legend.

It was an examination of the superliner: beginning when she was first designed; built; took to sea twice for her sea trials to make sure everything she was equiped with worked right; including, making sure that her davits worked right, and holding lifeboat drills with her crew; drewing all of this, her Captain was aboard her all the time, learning the ropes of how to operate the panels in her bridge; and finally took to Southampton to begin her maiden voyage to New York, via a Floridian port of call.

They even gave a short coverage of the tragedy that occurred while she was being fitted-out, that happened on the gangway. For which there was a mourning period.

In Southampton, she was not only formerly christened by Queen Elizabeth II, there also was a lot of pomp and circumstance celebrations, complete with fireworks...to see her off as well too.

Then at last we saw her arriving in New York's harbor; berthed at her pier; and later on, sailing out of NY Harbor for her return to Southampton.

I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary on QM2. emoticon

Hi Lill!

Everyone would enjoy this two-hour long documentary, about QM2.

They took her twice out on her sea trials. First time was to iron out her kinks, and to discover those kinks. Second time, was after they got her back to the outfitting yard, for which they corrected and fixed those kinks. And then tested them, before taking her out for still yet another sea trial.

They also held lifeboat drills with the crew, after they tested the davits by lowering the lifeboats and raising them. Same with her bow anchor chains out at sea.

Quite unlike, Olympic & Titanic, they were completely thorough. Why, even Captain Warwick was aboard her the whole time, learning how to operate the panels on her bridge.

But before QM2 was built, he was over here in the States down in Florida, leanring more about her operations on a simulator. But he said that nothing actally takes the place of actually being on the bridge and leanring them yourself.

Even I was greatly impressed with Captain Warwick. emoticon

sounds like he actually cares about his job as a captain.
im impressed just by hearing these things from you.

you do not find that kind of dedication from anyone with their jobs.

You can say that again, Lill...except from Will, but not necessarily from Captain Smith who was suffering from a lead foot & too much over confidence.

You-know-who too, thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. When we came to the end of it, I felt tears welling-up into his eyes, and then after we retired for the night...he totally lost it, crying himself to sleep. He was thinking about Titanic, and could've been had just as much time was spent with her making her seaworthy. Instead, only but a short few hours was spent with her during her sea trials.

you bring up and interesting point about the sea trials tammy.

you are right they did only last for a few hours. they were basing titanic on what olympic had done the previous year. sad but in all likely hood quite possibly true.

titanic was always judged by what olympic could do. they were like if oylmpic can do this then certainly titanic could i mean after all they were nearly identicle in most ways.

that is a debatable topic though and really needs its own thread lol.

i believe that titanic made sea travel safer forever .

if not for her people would still think they could outdo god and we would be in a terrible mess .
